On New Year's Day 1919, the HMY Iolaire struck rocks just outside Stornoway harbour, within sight of home, killing 205 of the 280 men aboard — Lewis and Harris servicemen returning from the First World War. It remains one of the worst maritime disasters in UK waters, and its grief marked the islands for generations.

For the centenary, this full-scale outline of the ship's hull — 189 feet stem to stern, exact to her true dimensions — was set into the beach with 280 illuminated posts, one for every man who sailed that night: blue for those lost, red for the survivors. Lit against the town at night and slowly claimed by the tide, it brings the Iolaire home at last, completing the final mile she never made.
