Older than Stonehenge, the Callanish Stones have stood on this stretch of Lewis moorland for around 5,000 years, their purpose still debated but their presence unmistakable. Raised in a cross-shaped setting with a central chambered tomb, they've watched over the landscape since long before recorded history began.
As night falls, the stones turn to pure silhouette against a sky still holding the last colour of sunset — deep blues fading into stars, with a last streak of orange low on the horizon. Standing among them at this hour, it's easy to feel how long they've been keeping watch.
Photographed on location on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
