Not far from the Butt of Lewis, the harbour at Port of Ness has sheltered Ness fishermen since the early 1800s. As the fleet grew, the harbour was enlarged in 1893, and this breakwater was added the following year — engineered by David and Thomas Stevenson, the same family behind lighthouses across Scotland's coast. Part of it has since been lost to the sea over the years, a reminder of just how much force this wall has had to withstand.
Caught mid-collision, the wave rises high over what remains of the wall in a burst of white spray with a rare vein of green at its core, dark storm clouds pressing down behind it. It's the breakwater still doing what it was built for well over a century ago — standing against the full force of where North Atlantic and Minch meet.
Photographed on location on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
